Why, after 49 years, I finally decided to become a fundraiser.

Melissa Arnzen Dugan

I don't normally fundraise. I am a avid "donator" but have shied away from actually asking for donations. I am leaving my comfort zone and asking you to help support my fundraising efforts on behalf of the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation.

Last summer, my good friend Alana's mother, Debbie, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Over the last year, I have watched Alana tirelessly support her mother as she has gone through treatment and participated in trials; working with insurance companies and doctors to try to get her mom the best treatment possible. The good folks at the Foundation have provided Alana with referrals, information and support as she learned how to navigate this new and terrifying reality for her mom and family.

Alana and I have been running buddies for the last several years: 5k's, half marathons, relay races. We were looking for an event to run together when Alana learned that the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation sponsored a team for the Disney Half Marathon "A Breath Away." It was the perfect way for us to run together in friendship and to support a cause that is deeply personal for Alana.

I am running this to support Alana and her mother, but also in memory of Marjorie Ann Moroni, my husband's grandmother, who succumbed to lung cancer in 2003. She was an amazing, strong, fun, loving and compassionate woman who was a role model to both my husband and I in so many ways. We miss her everyday.

Cancer manifests itself in many forms and there are very few people who have not had it touch their lives, either directly or through a family member, friend, neighbor or co-worker. If there is another cancer research foundation that you support - please make a donation to them and just post a note to me on this page.

One more thing - if I make my goal - I will run in a tutu. And post a picture of me in said tutu on social media. Seriously.
