Penny LaForest was truly a remarkable woman. She was a fierce ally, loyal friend but a formidable opponent to those who would sow despair and indignities upon others. Her open-minded sense of justice and generous heart was devoid of any bias. She was a warrior for those without a voice and an untiring advocate for tenant’s rights. As an exemplary educator devoted to her incarcerated students, her classroom provided an environment devoid of judgment and receptive to students discovering their extraordinary talents and hidden abilities. Penny garnered the respect of her colleagues and everyone who experienced the embrace of her towering intellect, compassion and an amazing sense of humor. It’s not a platitude when we say we lost her too soon and the world is diminished by her absence. She will live in our thoughts forever, especially when we join a fight for a good cause or remember to treat everyone with understanding and compassion. After all, this was Penny’s outstanding legacy!
