February 2019, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non Small Cell Lung Cancer. This came as a complete shock, that someone who didn’t smoke, lived in moderation and was quite fit would receive such a terminal diagnosis. I had been experiencing a chronic cough, eventually losing my voice and becoming short of breath. After a number of biopsies and scans I would learn my airways, as they split off to my lungs were closing and closing fast.
When diagnosed, I learned I had a biomarker that would be the driver in my cancer, ALK Positive. ALK Positive biomarker occurs in around 5% of all NSCLC diagnosis. The good news is that there are certain drugs that target the cancer cells with manageable side effects. The tough part is that my body will build an immunity to the medication and start producing cancer cells again.
This is where you come in. Lung cancer is the most federally underfunded cancer type as our leaders think it’s a smoker’s disease. When in fact, 60% of new diagnosis are non smokers. I need your help to fund many research efforts that will hopefully extend and even save my life. Please find a way to donate $25, as every dollar will assist in saving my life. Keep in mind, all you need is lungs to have lung cancer.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
